Artist In Focus

Gina Morton

The Variety of Life

Gina still lives in the house where she was born in 1951 in Darlington, north-east England. She enjoyed painting & drawing from an early age but was never encouraged to take this up as a career, so on leaving secondary school did a one-year secretarial course before getting a job at a local Bank in 1968.

She continued to paint at every possible opportunity, furthering her skills by painting with the local art society, doing correspondence courses, attending life classes & going on tutored painting holidays.

She tried various media, but particularly liked painting on location in watercolour. Her work became known locally & she held a few successful one-woman shows.

Her first encounter with miniature art came during the 1980s when some of her fellow Art Society friends went on a course & encouraged her to have a go.

She resisted the temptation due to lack of time. When she finally managed to escape
from the Bank via Voluntary Redundancy in 1996 she decided to take up the challenge.

To ‘test the waters‘ she submitted work for the British Society of Miniaturists‘ exhibition in Ilkley and was surprised when she won the “Rose Bowl“ for 2 years in succession.

After a while, she decided to aim higher by submitting work to the “Royal Miniature Society“. Some of her works were rejected but this inspired her to try harder & her breakthrough came in 2003, when she won 2 awards & was elected an Associate of the RMS. To her amazement, further awards followed.

Her Miniature works often reflect her love to animals, but she paints a wide range of subjects. Many of her works are inspired by visits to “BEAMISH – The Living Museum of the North“, where she is able to see costumed figures, working horses, vintage vehicals, musicians, interiors – the list is endless!
